Intermediate Biology Olympiad 2026

The Intermediate Biology Olympiad occupies an important middle position in the UK Biology Competitions system. UKBC is a registered charity that has been developing biology competitions since 1995, with a volunteer-led programme designed to enrich school biology and encourage students to explore ideas beyond their formal lessons. The Intermediate Biology Olympiad is aimed at the first year of post-16 education, so it is not just a harder version of Biology Challenge: it is a transition point between broad school enrichment and more specialised academic biology. The competition is entered through a recognised school or college and consists of two timed papers. One paper is grounded in topics students are likely to have met in the first year of A-level study, while the other introduces more unfamiliar problem-solving situations. That combination is educationally valuable. Students are asked to use what they know, identify what they do not know yet and reason carefully rather than abandon a question simply because its topic label is unfamiliar. Its value is also unusually visible in the next step. UKBC encourages students to reference participation in higher-education applications, and the competition provides a meaningful bridge for students deciding whether to pursue biology, medicine, biomedical science, veterinary science or related subjects. It is not the UK team-selection route to the International Biology Olympiad; that route begins with the British Biology Olympiad for the older post-16 cohort. The two competitions belong to the same ecosystem but serve different stages and purposes. We rate the Intermediate Biology Olympiad at Advanced Level. Entry is school-based and the syllabus is still recognisable to a first-year post-16 student, but the second paper and the expectation of biological problem-solving make preparation more demanding than ordinary revision. Students should use past papers to practise unfamiliar reasoning, not merely to memorise recurring answers.
