Our Take

FIRST Tech Challenge is a mentor-supported robotics program in which student teams design, build and program robots for an annual game. It is a strong fit for students who want engineering to feel tangible: software decisions affect mechanisms, mechanical choices affect strategy, and every subsystem must survive repeated testing. FTC centers each season on a newly released engineering challenge. That creates a genuine long-form project rather than a sequence of unrelated exercises. The value is the integration of design, coding, teamwork and judged communication; the trade-off is a substantial commitment of time, adult support, workspace and team coordination. Students should enter because they want to build together, not simply because robotics sounds impressive.
