eCYBERMISSION

Our Take

eCYBERMISSION is an Army Educational Outreach Program competition administered by the National Science Teaching Association. Its focus is the use of science and engineering to address a problem in the students’ own community. The name can sound like a computing contest, but the interesting question here is much broader: what have these students noticed around them, and how could they investigate it properly? NSTA’s account of the 2023 competition describes MISSing Monarchs establishing butterfly waystations and distributing milkweed seeds. That example gives the programme a more useful identity than a list of impressive-sounding research subjects. A familiar local concern can support serious work if the team can connect what it does to evidence. Our reading is that the attraction lies in that connection between scientific work and a place students actually know, rather than in dressing up an ordinary school project with ambitious terminology. This is a substantial commitment for a young team. We would choose it for students who are willing to revisit an idea, keep records and explain an imperfect result, with an adult who can help them sustain the work. It is a weaker fit for a family seeking a one-afternoon activity or an impressive object that a parent can build. The educational value is in the students’ decisions becoming clearer over time.
