World Food Photography Awards 2027 — Young (Under 18)

The latest published Young gallery offers two useful contrasts. Romanesco at Panzer's finds visual drama in the geometry of a vegetable, while Chhath Puja Offerings records food inside a religious and communal ritual. Together they show that the brief is wider than polished plates. The Young category asks photographers to tell a food story rather than merely produce a decorative image of a dish. The competition was formerly known as Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year and is now called the World Food Photography Awards. Across the programme, food photography is treated as a way to tell stories about people, places and cultures. The Young section keeps that documentary and narrative ambition but divides entrants into two age groups, so a child with a phone camera is not assessed in the same pool as an experienced seventeen-year-old. CompeteMap's view is that the low entry barrier should not be mistaken for an easy photographic problem. The camera can be simple; the observation cannot. A memorable entry needs a deliberate moment, frame and relationship to food, and it must still communicate when the photographer is not present to explain it. The most useful preparation is therefore not an expensive equipment upgrade. It is repeated looking, careful editing and the discipline to submit only images whose story is visible inside the frame.
