VFW Voice of Democracy

Voice of Democracy is the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ national scholarship competition for U.S. high-school students. <!-- COMPETEMAP:CLAIM:0 --> Its history begins outside the VFW: the National Association of Broadcasters launched the competition in 1947; VFW became its national sponsor in the late 1950s and assumed sole responsibility in 1961. <!-- COMPETEMAP:CLAIM:1 --> That broadcasting origin helps explain what still makes the contest unusual. Entrants write and personally record a democratic and patriotic-themed audio essay rather than submit a conventional written essay alone. <!-- COMPETEMAP:CLAIM:2 --> The work is therefore neither simply a written essay nor simply a speech: the idea has to hold up on the page, then survive the test of a listener hearing it once. A sentence that looks elegant in print may be difficult to follow aloud; a carefully placed pause or concrete image may carry more force than a paragraph of abstractions. The current theme, What a Veteran Taught Me About America, invites gratitude but requires more than praise. A strong response identifies a lesson, shows how it was learned and explains how that lesson changed the student's understanding of the country. The veteran may be personally known or encountered through responsible research, but the essay needs a specific intellectual and emotional centre. The contest is worth considering for students who have something genuine to examine and are willing to revise both script and delivery. It is a poor fit for borrowed patriotic language. Judges can hear when a speaker is performing phrases that do not belong to them. Originality begins with choosing a real question and ends with a recording that sounds like a person thinking clearly.
