United Kingdom Linguistics Olympiad 2027 (UKLO)

Difficulty varies by division from Beginner to Advanced, A free school linguistics olympiad built around decoding unfamiliar-language patterns rather than recalling vocabulary. Four divisions cover ages 7 to 18; the younger divisions allow teams, while the oldest division uses an individual paper. Challenge rises by age group, from accessible pattern spotting to multi-step analysis and a pathway toward international team selection.

Editorial perspective

Our Take

UKLO presents language-data puzzles that can be solved without prior knowledge of the language being analysed. That design is the competition's real strength: it separates linguistic curiosity from vocabulary learning and asks students to infer a system from evidence. A pupil who has never studied the language on the page can still solve the puzzle by comparing forms, testing a pattern and revising it when an example refuses to fit. CompeteMap sees UKLO as an unusually good test of patient reasoning. The lower divisions can be collaborative and exploratory, while the oldest school division becomes a strict individual paper with a much longer pathway beyond it. The main trade-off is that clever guessing is rarely enough. Students must write the rule clearly, check it against every example and tolerate the moment when their first theory breaks.
