TEAMS 2027 Registration Opens with New Divisions and Fee Structure

Registration is now open for the 2027 TEAMS — Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science State Competition, operated by the Technology Student Association (TSA). Registration opened on 17 August 2026 and will close on 8 January 2027.

The 2027 theme is “Engineering a Smarter World.”

The full competition timeline has also been announced. The Middle School Essay is due on 11 January 2027, followed by the High School Essay deadline on 12 January. The State Competition Window runs from 13 January to 20 February 2027. State rankings and National Competition qualifiers will be announced in March, with National registration opening in April. The National TEAMS Competition will take place from 23–27 June 2027 in Orlando, Florida.

New Registration Fees for 2027

TEAMS has introduced a new school-based registration fee structure for 2027:

1–5 teams: $300
6–10 teams: $400
11+ teams: $500

TSA-affiliated chapters and NCTM members are eligible for a 10% discount.

New Teal and Purple Competition Divisions

Another major change for 2027 is the introduction of new Competition Divisions based on the highest-level mathematics course team members have completed or are currently taking.

Both Middle School and High School teams will compete in either a Teal or Purple division. For Middle School teams, factors include whether students have taken Algebra I. At High School level, courses such as Precalculus, Calculus and Statistics are used to determine the appropriate division.

This division system is officially designated “New for 2027.”

Eligibility

TEAMS is open to Middle School students in Grades 6–8 and High School students in Grades 9–12. In certain cases, Grade 5 or Grade 9 students who are officially enrolled within a middle school may compete at the Middle School level.

Teams consist of 4–6 students. Students must attend a public or private school, every team must be affiliated with a school, and participating students must attend the school represented by their team.

Participation follows the United States school-based competition system, progressing from State Competition rankings to qualification for the National Competition.
