Reported — 29 October 2026 | England
Schools Week reports that councils have been given targets to increase the proportion of reception-age children achieving a good level of development by 2028, alongside targets for disadvantaged pupils.
Nearly all councils are expected to improve by nine percentage points against their 2024 baseline. School leaders warn that improvements must reflect children’s actual development, rather than an excessive focus on assessment figures.
