AMC 8 is the entry-level MAA American Mathematics Competition for middle-school students and younger problem solvers.
AMC 8 is the youngest of the main MAA American Mathematics Competitions and one of the most recognisable entry points into contest mathematics. It is designed for middle-school students and younger eligible pupils, with a 25-question, 40-minute multiple-choice paper. The problems are not simply school exercises with larger numbers: they ask students to combine ideas, notice a shortcut or interpret a familiar topic in an unfamiliar way.
The MAA describes AMC as a programme intended to build confidence and problem-solving ability. AMC 8 plays that introductory role. It is not an automatic qualification for AMC 10; a strong result is evidence of promise, not a guaranteed pathway.
Students normally participate through a school, maths circle, learning centre or other approved competition manager. Families outside the United States should check local hosting arrangements before assuming that individual online entry is available.

Begin with official past papers. Review mistakes by thinking error: misread condition, weak diagram, arithmetic slip or inefficient method. Practise geometry, counting, fractions, ratios and probability, along with deciding when to skip a question and return later.
AMC 8 tests flexible middle-school reasoning rather than advanced content. Its best questions create a gap between the first interpretation and the useful interpretation. Students learn to draw, organise cases, estimate and check whether an answer is plausible. That is why past-paper review should focus on thinking errors, not only on missing topics.
AMC 8 is a good fit for a student who enjoys puzzles and wants a common challenge experience. It should not become a compulsory prelude to AMC 10. Some students will move towards harder contests; others will use the experience to build confidence in ordinary mathematics or explore a different subject.
After AMC 8, students can choose among several directions: continue with AMC-style problem solving, try team mathematics, explore written Olympiad problems or simply use the experience to strengthen confidence. There is no single correct next step. The useful question is which kind of problem makes the student want to keep thinking.
