The Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo is the senior UKMT follow-on competition for students who have already performed strongly in the Senior Mathematical Challenge. It keeps the compact, answer-focused character of the Kangaroo format, but raises the level of the ideas involved. Students are not expected to write a long proof for every question; they are expected to recognise structure quickly, choose an efficient route and record an exact answer under time pressure.
The competition is named after Andrew Jobbings, who made a major contribution to UKMT activities and helped develop the UK's relationship with the international Kangourou sans Frontières network. That history explains why the event feels different from an ordinary school extension paper. Kangaroo competitions are designed to make challenging mathematics available to large numbers of students, while still rewarding genuine ingenuity.
Its place in the UKMT pathway needs to be clear. The usual starting point is the Senior Mathematical Challenge, followed by a Senior Kangaroo invitation or entry route under the current rules. BMO Round 1 is a parallel senior follow-on with a different output: Kangaroo answers are concise and numerical, while BMO expects written mathematical arguments. A student may enjoy one format more than the other; the competitions should not be treated as a simple ranking.
We rate the Senior Kangaroo at Advanced Level. That reflects the selective entry and the problem-solving demand for senior students. Preparation should focus on decision making, not on memorising tricks: past papers, time management, exact arithmetic and reviewing why an attractive method failed are more useful than racing through university topics.

Use UKMT past papers and books as timed practice, then revisit every question where the answer was guessed or reached inefficiently. Students should practise algebraic manipulation, geometry, divisibility, counting and estimation, but should also learn when to skip a problem and return later. The paper is arranged roughly by difficulty, so finishing every question is not the only measure of success.
The Senior Kangaroo rewards selection as much as solution. Students must decide which questions deserve immediate attention, which can be simplified and which should be left temporarily. Because there is no penalty for wrong answers, the strategy is different from a contest where guessing is costly, but careless answers still reveal weak checking.
This is a good next step for a student who enjoys the SMC format and wants harder ideas without moving straight to written proofs. It is not a lesser version of BMO1. The better question is whether the student enjoys concise, high-pressure problem solving or prefers the slower construction of a proof.
The Senior Kangaroo is often a useful decision point. Students who enjoy its short, demanding format may want to try BMO-style proof problems; students who prefer explanation, data or collaboration may find a different mathematics route more motivating. Either response is useful guidance for future choices.
Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo is an advanced-level UKMT follow-on competition for senior students invited or entered after strong Senior Mathematical Challenge performance. It honours Andrew Jobbings, a major contributor to UKMT and the UK Kangaroo programme, and uses a 60-minute paper with three-digit answers and no penalty for wrong answers. It is not the same as BMO Round 1: the Kangaroo keeps a concise problem-solving format, while BMO1 requires fuller written proofs.
