Four tests, four different habits

Number Sense is a ten-minute mental-arithmetic test with eighty questions. Its distinctive demand is doing the work mentally rather than writing out a conventional calculation. For a child, the question is not simply how much arithmetic they know, but whether they can spot an efficient numerical relationship quickly enough to use it.

Sprint provides forty minutes for thirty multiple-choice problems without calculators. The elementary scoring rules penalise incorrect answers, so careless guessing and a reasoned decision to leave an item unanswered are not equivalent. Read those rules before practising; habits learned for another contest may not transfer neatly.

Target presents four pairs of questions, with six minutes for each pair and calculators allowed. That shorter cycle changes pacing. A student who spends too long on the first question in a pair cannot rely on recovering the time much later in the paper.

Team provides twenty minutes for ten problems, with groups of one to four students. The educational opportunity here is collaboration that actually helps: sharing a useful observation, checking someone else’s result and noticing when two students are unknowingly doing the same work.

That wider structure can be motivating for a child who enjoys the first experience. It should not be the only reason to attend. Travel, scheduling and the appetite for further timed competition are separate family decisions, best made once the child knows what the event feels like.

Individual and school sweepstakes awards use different scoring totals. This is another reason not to equate a school’s result with an individual child’s entire performance. Ask which component a reported total describes before drawing comparisons.

For team practice, give students a reason to communicate. Ask one student to explain a solution while another checks it, then change roles. An adult can help the group notice unproductive habits without solving the question for them. The aim is shared mathematical work, not a silent race between teammates.
