AIPO: the algorithm has to survive the judge
Why preliminary submissions, test cases and the Irish informatics pathway reward robust code rather than clever-looking code.
Competition Guides
An overview of Explore and Challenge, and how Irish families and schools can choose between them.
FIRST LEGO League Ireland is best understood as a progression of programmes, not one competition with the same task for every age. Explore introduces younger teams to research, a coded LEGO model and a celebration-style presentation. Challenge adds an autonomous robot game, a more developed innovation project, robot design explanation and tournament judging.
Creative Hut delivers the programme in Ireland, with teams participating through schools, after-school groups, youth clubs and other supported settings. Both programmes use an annual real-world theme and FIRST Core Values, but the experience is deliberately different. Explore is designed to make the first project visible and discussable. Challenge asks students to coordinate several substantial outputs under competition conditions.
CompeteMap's advice is to choose by workload and team readiness rather than by prestige. A younger or first-time group may learn more from completing Explore confidently than from entering Challenge before it can sustain programming, research and presentation work. Challenge is a strong option when students want genuine division of roles and can meet regularly. In both cases, the adult coach should create structure and safety without becoming the team's designer, programmer or spokesperson.

Choose Explore when students need a guided introduction to research, building and coding, and when the goal is to explain a shared learning journey. Choose Challenge when the team is ready to manage an autonomous robot, an innovation project and several judged conversations.
Equipment matters, but time matters more. Challenge teams need enough access to the robot and mission field to test repeatedly. Explore teams need a device for coding and enough sessions to research, build, revise and prepare their display.
Set a regular meeting rhythm, keep decisions visible and rotate opportunities to build, code and present. Ask students to explain why a choice was made before suggesting a replacement. A polished result produced by adults defeats the programme's central purpose.
Funding support and included materials can change by season. Review the local registration package carefully, including what equipment the team must already own and what is supplied.
