JSHS: research must survive the questions

Build a defensible investigation, then prepare to explain its limits before scientists

JSHS is a regional-to-national programme built around students presenting original STEM research. Its defining demand is not simply that a project exists, but that the student can explain and defend the investigation before scientists. JSHS asks students to defend original research in front of scientists, not simply display a finished project. The programme begins locally. Students use an assigned regional symposium, normally hosted through a university or partner organisation, and selected presenters continue to the national event. Begin with the correct region

Checked on 2026-09-09: the forthcoming national symposium is described as the sixty-fourth National JSHS and is scheduled for spring 2027. Regional application dates vary. Students in school years nine through twelve who meet the citizenship or permanent-residency requirements begin with the region assigned to their location. Regional participation is offered at no cost, but submission formats and local timetables must be confirmed with the regional programme.

The region finder is therefore the first practical tool. A student should identify the correct host, read its instructions and work backward from the local submission date. National information cannot substitute for a region's file naming, consent, paper length or event schedule.

This distributed model also means that teachers should avoid quoting a date from another state or university. Build the planning calendar from the assigned region, then keep the national rules beside it because those rules shape research ethics, written materials and presentation standards.

Make the research paper do real work

The paper is not a long caption for a display. It should establish the question, explain why it matters, describe methods precisely enough to evaluate, present results honestly and show how the conclusion follows. If a reader cannot identify variables, comparison conditions or analysis choices, a strong visual presentation will not repair the underlying problem.

Write the method section while research is underway. Recording procedures, changes and failed approaches in real time reduces the temptation to reconstruct a cleaner story later. Keep raw data, analysis files, code versions and photographs of experimental arrangements where appropriate. These records help the student answer questions about reproducibility and personal contribution.

The statement of outside assistance deserves the same care. Mentorship and access to sophisticated facilities can strengthen research, but only when the student's role is explicit. Identify who proposed the question, who designed each procedure, who performed the analysis and where specialist guidance changed the work.

Prepare for the question after the presentation

Many students rehearse the prepared talk and neglect the discussion that follows. JSHS judging makes responses part of the evidence. A student should be able to defend a design choice, explain an anomaly, distinguish correlation from mechanism and state what additional evidence would change the conclusion.

Build a question bank with a mentor or teacher. Include friendly clarification questions, technical challenges and questions that expose limits. Practise pausing before answering. A concise admission that the current data cannot resolve a point is stronger than an improvised claim.

Oral and poster formats need different communication choices. An oral presenter controls the sequence and must keep the audience oriented through each transition. A poster presenter needs a visual hierarchy that lets a judge enter the work from several points. Both formats require the same scientific backbone: a clear question, legible evidence and conclusions that remain proportional to the results.

Learn from published research titles

Checked on 2026-09-09: the published national results include Siri Peddinti's work on detecting and tracking major depressive disorder through vocal features, Sean Skinner's physics-informed machine-learning approach to generative design, and Eric Buehler's work on post-training quantisation for educational applications. These projects differ sharply in topic, but their titles identify a specific technical problem and method rather than making a general claim to “use artificial intelligence.”

That specificity is a useful test. Remove the project name and ask whether the title still identifies the object of study, the intervention or method and the intended measurement. If the title could describe dozens of unrelated projects, the research question may still be too broad.

Students should not imitate fashionable subject matter. The stronger lesson from the official results is that a focused investigation can be evaluated inside one of several disciplines when its method and contribution are clear. Category placement follows the substance of the research, not the trendiness of its vocabulary.

Build a regional-to-national preparation plan

Start with compliance: region, ethical approvals, subject rules and required written materials. Next schedule a research freeze early enough to analyse results and revise the paper without changing the investigation at the last moment. Then build the presentation from the evidence rather than from a decorative template.

Use three rehearsal audiences. A classmate should tell you where the story becomes confusing. A subject teacher should challenge scientific reasoning. A specialist mentor should test the hardest assumptions. Record recurring questions and revise the presentation only when revision makes the argument clearer.
