FIRST and LEGO Education have run FIRST LEGO League for nearly three decades, reaching young people in more than 100 countries. Its familiar formula has never been only about making a robot move. The programme asks children to work through uncertain engineering decisions, divide responsibility and explain what they learned. That combination is why the strongest teams often look less like a collection of fast coders and more like a small design studio that can test, argue constructively and recover from failure.
BIOGLOW is the last season using the FIRST LEGO League name, with Founders Edition and Future Edition offered during the transition. That makes the current U.S. cycle unusual. Families and schools are choosing not merely a challenge but a technology route: Founders Edition continues with SPIKE equipment, while Future Edition uses the newer Computer Science & AI kits. A returning team should not assume that its previous hardware, age band or event pathway transfers automatically.
CompeteMap's view is that the first serious task belongs to the adults: identify the programme option, full budget and local event availability before promising students a competition season. Once that structure is secure, ownership should shift steadily to the team. The real value lies in sustained iteration and communication, not in an adult-engineered machine that performs neatly on event day. This is especially worthwhile for students who enjoy building ideas together and can treat a failed mission as evidence rather than embarrassment.

Founders Edition retains Explore and Challenge, while Future Edition groups students by K–2, grades 3–5 and grades 6–8.

Founders Explore centres on models and early engineering habits. Founders Challenge asks teams to code a SPIKE Prime robot for timed missions and develop an Innovation Project connected to the season theme. Future Edition uses different hardware and an alliance-based game. These are related experiences, but they are not interchangeable packages.

Depending on the route, a new team may need a technology kit, annual set, spare components, storage, transport and a separate local event fee.
Ask three questions before payment: what equipment is required, what is included in the season price, and which event can this team actually attend? Returning Founders teams may already own compatible SPIKE equipment. A Future Edition team may face a larger first-year hardware purchase. A Class Pack can suit classroom delivery but does not automatically create the same external tournament route as a team entry.
The best cost decision is not necessarily the cheapest. It is the option the adults can support consistently without limiting student access to equipment between meetings. One well-supported team with dependable practice time usually learns more than several teams sharing a kit so tightly that nobody can test.
Founders Challenge pairs a two-and-a-half-minute robot game with research and problem solving around a real-world theme. That dual structure should shape the team calendar. If coding absorbs every meeting, the project and communication work become a rushed add-on. If presentation work is left entirely to confident speakers, the technical students lose the chance to explain their decisions.
Rotate roles early. One student can lead a mission attempt while another records changes, a third checks reliability and others work on the project question. Roles can become more specialised later, but everyone should understand the robot, the project and the team's working agreements. Judges and event volunteers can tell when knowledge belongs to one student rather than the group.
Treat the engineering notebook as a thinking tool even when a specific document is not scored. Record the code version, attachment, starting position, observed result and next change. A photograph of the field setup can make a vague failure reproducible. Without that discipline, teams repeat experiments and argue from memory.
BIOGLOW invites students to explore ecosystems and biodiversity. A strong project begins with a narrow problem that a team can investigate, not with a sweeping promise to save the planet. Talk to someone who works with the issue, observe a local setting and define what a useful improvement would look like.
The robot game already provides fixed missions, but the team's strategy remains open. Start with reliable points close to base, then add complexity only when repeated runs justify it. A clever attachment that succeeds once is less valuable than a simple mechanism the whole team can reset. Under event pressure, repeatability protects both score and confidence.

That recognition is useful because it highlights the programme's broad definition of performance: technical work matters, but so do project thinking, explanation and team culture.
Event availability, format and timing vary by region. Confirm the correct local partner, age rules and fee before building a season calendar. Some teams will attend a festival or qualifier; others may use an in-school format. Travel expectations can differ sharply even within the United States.
Selected teams may advance through the regional event structure to invitation-level events, subject to local availability. Treat that route as a possibility rather than a promise. A sensible season goal is to finish with a functioning solution, a team that can explain its process and a record of what changed through testing.
Leave enough time for administrative details. Youth enrolment, coach screening, consent forms, ordering and shipping can delay a team that appears technically ready. Put those tasks on an adult checklist so student meetings remain focused on the work students should own.
Use the first meetings to learn the kit and agree how decisions will be made. Next, explore all missions and possible project questions before choosing priorities. In the middle of the season, run short design cycles with visible evidence: plan, build, test, record and decide. In the closing weeks, practise complete runs, transitions and explanations rather than continuously adding features.
Protect reflection time after the event. Ask which decisions were evidence-led, which failures taught the most and where teamwork became fragile. The last season under the FLL name is still valuable even if a team does not continue to another event. Its strongest legacy is a group of students who understand that engineering is a social process built from disciplined curiosity.
Choose Founders or Future Edition before buying equipment, and confirm local event availability before promising a tournament. Budget beyond the initial season price. Give students real ownership across code, construction, project research and communication, with enough documentation to learn from failed tests. The best outcome is not a flawless robot; it is a team that can explain how evidence changed what it built.
