Irish Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 is one of the clearest entry points into serious senior Olympiad mathematics in Ireland. It is a school-based paper for eligible second-level students, and its role is to expose students to problems that cannot be solved by applying the first familiar formula. The work is likely to involve a construction, a hidden invariant, a number-theoretic observation or a chain of reasoning that has to be written carefully. The competition is organised through the Irish Mathematical Olympiad system rather than through ordinary school examination structures. Teachers register participating schools each year, which means parents should speak to the mathematics department rather than look for a conventional individual sign-up form.
