Our Take
The Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin papers are the proof-based intermediate stage of the UKMT pathway. They are often described as a harder follow-on to IMC, but the more important difference is the kind of answer required. Students are asked to develop a mathematical argument, not merely select or calculate a result. A correct intuition only becomes a competitive solution when the written reasoning explains why the idea works in every permitted case. The usual route is through a strong Intermediate Mathematical Challenge performance, with the exact invitation and discretionary-entry rules set by UKMT for each cycle. The three papers reflect school year and stage within the intermediate age group. Families should check the current UKMT table rather than assuming that a student can choose any paper or enter without school support. This is a good fit for students who have started to enjoy proof, diagrams, invariants and the satisfaction of turning an observation into a complete argument. It is less suitable as a last-minute extension for a student whose only experience is timed multiple choice. The most productive preparation combines past CHM papers with feedback on clarity, not just an answer key. We rate the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad at the Advanced Level. It is a meaningful bridge towards senior Olympiad work, but it should be valued for the mathematical habits it develops rather than treated as an admissions shortcut.
