Our Take
British Mathematical Olympiad Round 2 is not simply the next paper after BMO1. It is a much narrower stage of the UK mathematics pathway, intended for students who have already demonstrated strong Olympiad ability and are ready for problems with very little scaffolding. The paper rewards depth: one well-developed idea can matter more than several quick observations, and a plausible answer is not enough without a convincing argument. Entry is normally selective, with invitations based on BMO1 performance and limited discretionary routes. Families should therefore understand the qualification order before planning preparation: a student generally reaches BMO2 through the senior Challenge and BMO pathway rather than by registering independently. This is one reason the competition carries a different meaning from an ordinary school contest: participation itself indicates that the student has reached a highly advanced stage of the national pathway. BMO2 can be a strong fit for students who enjoy number theory, geometry, combinatorics and the craft of writing a proof from first principles. It is less suitable for a student who only wants a prestigious line on a list. The time spent learning how to abandon an unproductive approach, find a useful lemma and present a clean solution is the real educational return. We rate BMO2 at the Expert Level. That rating reflects the depth of the problems and the selective route, not a prediction about university admissions. Preparation should be measured in months and years of serious problem solving, not in a final-week revision plan.
