International Biology Olympiad

The International Biology Olympiad is the premier global biology competition for secondary students, organised by International Biology Olympiad e.V. Its purpose is broader than finding the student who can remember the most facts. The event brings national teams together to test theoretical and practical biology, stimulate curiosity in the biosciences and create an environment built around passion, cooperation, excellence, interculturalism and education. The week-long format, including exams, ceremonies and cultural activities, is deliberately both academically intense and internationally connective. The UK’s relationship with the IBO is managed by UK Biology Competitions, which holds the UK seat in the IBO governing body. The route is therefore selective rather than open entry. A student normally begins with the British Biology Olympiad; the highest-performing eligible students may then be invited through their schools to UK Team Selection, where further theoretical and practical training and assessment are used to select four students for the international team. This progression matters: winning a school-level biology award and joining the UK IBO team are very different stages of the pathway. At the international event, students face long theory and practical examinations that test knowledge, data interpretation, laboratory technique, adaptability and endurance. The competition’s significance comes from that combination. It is a meeting point for the strongest pre-university biology students from many countries, but it also gives students an unusually clear view of how university-style biological thinking differs from classroom coverage. We rate the International Biology Olympiad at Expert Level. There is no direct individual registration route for the UK team, and qualification requires exceptional performance through the national selection process. Students interested in medicine, biological sciences, biotechnology or research should treat it as a long-term pathway: build breadth early, use BBO-style questions to develop transfer skills, and seek practical experience rather than preparing only through memorisation.
