Our Take
The Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge is the national middle-school STEM research competition run by Society for Science in the United States. Society for Science, established in 1921, is also known for Science News and for operating major student research programmes including the Regeneron Science Talent Search and Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. The Junior Innovators Challenge therefore sits inside a broader science-fair ecosystem, rather than being an isolated online award. Its title sponsor, Thermo Fisher Scientific, supports the programme’s goal of widening access to research and encouraging a more diverse future STEM community. The route into the competition is one of its defining features. Students in grades 6–8 do not normally submit a completely open application. They first take part in a Society-affiliated science and engineering fair; the top 10% of eligible competitors may be nominated, after which they complete the national application with project details, reflections and parental permission. The competition then selects a Top 300 and a smaller finalist group for a week of judging, project presentation, team challenges and educational activities. This structure changes what preparation should look like. A promising idea is only the beginning. Students need a focused question, a fair method, reliable evidence, a clear record of decisions and the ability to explain limitations honestly. Because the programme includes research communication and collaboration as well as judging, it rewards students who can move from making a project to understanding and defending it. We rate the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge at Expert Level. The age range makes it an early opportunity, but the science-fair nomination route, national selection and research expectations are demanding. It is best suited to students who enjoy sustained investigation in biology, engineering, computing, environmental science or physical science, and to families who can help with logistics while keeping the scientific ownership firmly with the student.
