Our Take
The Diamond Challenge 2027 is a strong choice for students who want to test whether an idea can survive contact with real users, real constraints and a real pitch. It is organised by Horn Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware and is open to high-school students internationally. The prize matters, but the more interesting feature is the structure: teams are asked to move from a concept to a concise written case and then defend it in front of judges. This makes Diamond different from a traditional business-plan assignment. A polished idea is not enough. The team has to explain the problem, identify the people affected, show why its solution is better than existing alternatives, and demonstrate that the project could either create sustainable revenue or produce a credible social benefit. In other words, the competition rewards the quality of the reasoning behind the venture, not just the confidence of the presentation. The two tracks create two different kinds of ambition. **Business Innovation** is about solving a customer problem in a way that can generate revenue and profit. **Social Innovation** is about addressing a social or environmental problem and creating positive impact. They share the same entrepreneurial discipline, but they should not be judged by the same success measure. A social venture does not become stronger by pretending that impact is simply another word for sales. We see the competition as particularly valuable for students considering business, economics, technology, engineering, design, public policy or social enterprise. It is also useful for students who are not yet sure which subject they want to study but enjoy building, testing and persuading. The important qualification is that this is a serious team project. It is not a last-minute essay competition with a business vocabulary added on top.
