How to choose between team and individual competitions, based on learning goals, student ownership, preparation burden and competition format.
Parents often ask which is better for a student: a team competition or an individual one. The honest answer is that the format changes the learning experience so substantially that “better” is the wrong first question. A team competition asks a student to contribute to a system of people. An individual competition asks the student to make their own thinking visible. Both can be demanding, educational and valuable; they simply reveal different strengths.
The more useful question is: what does this student need to practise next? A student who has excellent ideas but struggles to explain them to others may benefit from a small team project. A student who is always carried by a group may need an individual paper that shows what they can do alone. A younger student may use a team event to make a new subject feel social and manageable, while an older student preparing for a subject pathway may need the diagnostic clarity of an individual challenge.
Our editorial view is that families should not build a competition profile around one format. A balanced year might contain one individual challenge that develops personal depth and one team project that develops collaboration and delivery. The balance does not need to be 50/50. It should reflect the student’s age, subject interest, available support and the kind of evidence they want to produce.
“Team competition” can mean at least three different things:
The same confusion happens with individual competitions. A student may write alone, but the entry may still require a teacher to register the school. UK Bebras, for example, is an individual student experience in its tasks but is normally organised through a school. By contrast, a competition such as the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is centred on the student’s own submitted work.
Before comparing formats, check four separate questions: Who registers? Who produces the work? Who is assessed? Who receives the result? Those answers often matter more than the word “team” in the title.
Individual competitions are especially good at making a student’s own subject thinking visible. The result is easier to attribute: a solution, essay, poem, code submission or biology paper belongs to one student. This can be useful feedback for the student and for parents deciding what to study next.

Individual formats also have weaknesses. They can make a student believe that ability is a fixed ranking, especially when the competition is timed and narrow. A student may understand a subject deeply but perform poorly because of exam anxiety, unfamiliar wording or a single bad day. They can also encourage preparation that is efficient but isolated: lots of answer practice, not much discussion or making.
The best individual competition is therefore not always the one with the highest prestige. It is the one that produces useful information about the student’s next learning step.
Team competitions create a different kind of difficulty. The team has to coordinate knowledge, time and responsibility while producing something coherent. A technically excellent idea can fail because the team cannot agree on priorities, test the design together or explain its decisions to judges.

The strongest team projects create interdependence without creating invisibility. Each member should own a meaningful part of the work, but also understand enough of the whole project to explain how the pieces fit together.
A common mistake is to assume that team competitions are automatically best for outgoing students and individual competitions are best for quiet students. That is too simplistic. Teamwork is a set of learnable behaviours: listening, documenting, disagreeing with evidence, handing over work, asking for help and making decisions under time pressure.
A quiet student may be the person who notices a design flaw or produces the best technical analysis. An outgoing student may need to learn that presenting confidently does not compensate for incomplete testing. Good team competitions reward contribution, reliability and integration, not only speaking volume.
Parents should look for team structures that make contribution visible. A useful team keeps a shared task board, a version history, a test log or an argument plan. A weak team has one student who owns the code, one who makes the slides and two who appear only on competition day.
Neither format is automatically easier. They are demanding in different ways.

For a family with limited time, an individual competition may be easier to schedule. For a student who learns through making and discussion, a team project may be more motivating but harder to organise. The practical burden is not just the student’s ability; it is the infrastructure around the competition.

Some competitions intentionally combine both. SciFest Ireland, for example, can support individual or small-team research depending on the event. Student Enterprise Programme places more weight on enterprise development and team delivery, but the student’s own contribution still matters. Read the entry rules and judging criteria before assuming what the format will feel like.
For younger students, a team competition can lower the emotional barrier to trying something new. A child who would not enter a science project alone may enjoy building a robot or investigating a local problem with friends. The danger is that adults solve the project for them or that one confident student dominates.
In the middle years of secondary school, a useful pattern is to alternate formats. A student might complete an individual maths or writing challenge, then join a science, coding or enterprise team. This creates both personal accountability and practical collaboration.
For older students, the choice should follow the intended subject direction. An individual essay or Olympiad paper may show sustained academic interest. A team engineering or enterprise project may demonstrate initiative, design decisions and execution. Neither is automatically stronger for university; relevance and genuine ownership matter more than the format label.

Term one: enter one manageable individual challenge to establish a personal baseline and discover a subject interest.
Term two: join a team project with a clear problem, defined roles and enough time for testing.
Term three: review both experiences. Did the student learn more from independent practice, group discussion, making, writing or presenting? Use the answer to choose the next year’s anchor competition.
This is not a rule that every student needs two competitions. One well-chosen event may be enough in a busy year. The point is to avoid entering team competitions for the appearance of collaboration or individual competitions for the appearance of academic seriousness.
