England updates secondary-school accountability guidance
The Department for Education updated its 2026 Key Stage 4 accountability guidance on 20 October. For the 2025–26 academic year, the headline measures are Attainment 8, the percentage of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and mathematics, and sustained education or employment destinations. Progress 8 cannot be calculated because the cohort lacks Key Stage 2 results following pandemic-era test cancellations, but is expected to return for 2026–27. Separate English Baccalaureate measures have been removed, although former EBacc subjects continue to count within Attainment 8. Official guidance

Eurostat launches tenth European Statistics Competition
Eurostat announced the 2027 European Statistics Competition on 19 October, marking the secondary-school contest’s tenth edition. Entry begins through national competitions organised by participating statistical institutes, with schedules and registration deadlines varying by country. Countries may nominate up to two teams in each of the 14–16 and 16–18 age groups for the European stage, so students cannot enter the international final directly. Finalists will produce videos using official statistics on a topic due in December 2026, with European winners announced before an awards ceremony in Luxembourg in June 2027.
