The John Hooper Statistical Poster Competition is a different kind of mathematics opportunity. Instead of giving every entrant the same paper, it asks students to find a question in the world around them and use data to investigate it. The final poster has to do several jobs at once: explain why the question matters, show where the data came from, make the analysis understandable and communicate a conclusion without pretending that the data says more than it really does.
The competition is organised by Ireland's Central Statistics Office and is named after John Hooper, the first Director of Statistics of the Irish Free State. That connection gives the event a clear public purpose. It is designed to help students see statistics as a way of making sense of daily life, not just as a collection of formulas. Topics can range from sport and transport to school life, health, environment or media, provided the project uses statistics meaningfully.
Entries can be individual or made by teams of up to three students aged 19 and under from the island of Ireland. A teacher must register the entry. The competition is therefore accessible to students who are not preparing for Olympiad mathematics, but it still demands mature judgement. A colourful poster with weak data or an unclear question will not become a strong statistical investigation through design alone.
We rate it at Intermediate Level. The skill demand is real but the entry barrier is low, and the output is a complete research poster rather than a timed proof. It is especially suitable for students considering economics, business, social science, geography, data science, public policy or any subject where evidence has to be interpreted and communicated.
Parent perspective: the strongest project is usually built around a narrow question that can be answered honestly, not a grand topic with too much data.

The poster should not identify the student or school on the artwork itself. Families should check the current cycle for registration and submission dates because the CSO page may show dates as they are confirmed.
Start with a question that has a population, a measurable variable and a realistic method. “What do teenagers think about everything?” is too broad. “How does the time of day affect the type of transport students use to get to school?” is more manageable, provided the data can be collected ethically.
Students should record how responses were gathered, distinguish correlation from causation and explain missing or biased data. A simple, transparent graph is usually more persuasive than a crowded poster full of decorative charts.
A strong poster makes the research process visible. It explains how participants or observations were selected, what the variables mean, which limitations remain and why the conclusion is proportionate to the data. Students should resist the temptation to remove awkward results. Honest uncertainty is part of statistical literacy.
John Hooper is particularly suitable for a student who likes asking questions about people, places or behaviour and is comfortable combining research with design. It can also be a strong team project because the work naturally divides into question design, data checking, analysis and communication, provided every member understands the final argument.
The lasting value is not just a polished poster. Students learn to make a claim that is proportionate to evidence, which is an important distinction in economics, social science, science and journalism. A well-documented project can also become a strong starting point for later research or data competitions.
John Hooper Statistical Poster Competition is an intermediate-level competition for students aged 19 and under across the island of Ireland. It allows individual entries or teams of up to three, with a teacher registering the project. The Central Statistics Office asks students to identify a real-world question, collect or use data, assess data quality, analyse results and communicate them on a clear poster. It is not an Olympiad-style maths contest; its value lies in statistical literacy, research judgement and visual explanation.
