IMTA Team Maths is built around a simple idea that individual mathematics competitions often miss: solving a difficult problem with other people is a different skill from solving it alone. Teams of four students work through a table-quiz format based on Leaving Certificate Higher Level Mathematics. They have to recognise which teammate is best placed to take a problem, communicate a useful observation before it is fully polished and keep the group moving when an early approach fails.
The competition has a long history in Ireland. Regional rounds began in 1991 and national finals have been held since 2005. That continuity matters because Team Maths has become part of the school mathematics calendar rather than a one-off enrichment activity. The regional structure also gives students outside the largest schools a realistic route to a national stage, provided a teacher is willing to organise a team.
This is not an individual Olympiad and it is not a direct qualifier for the Irish Mathematical Olympiad or IMO team. Its educational value is complementary: it develops mathematical communication, strategic delegation and calm decision making. A student who is brilliant at solo problem solving may still need to learn how to make their thinking useful to three other people.
We rate it at Advanced Level because the questions are aimed at senior students working with Higher Level Mathematics and the regional-to-national route is selective. The strongest preparation is not simply more difficult content. Teams should practise the format itself, including role rotation, time checks and explaining a solution in a way a teammate can verify.

Team Maths suits students who:
Students do not need identical strengths. One may be quick with algebra, another with geometry, another with estimation and another with checking.
Start with past regional and final questions, then practise under realistic time limits. Rotate roles so that one student does not become the permanent calculator or spokesperson. After each set, discuss not only which answers were wrong but whether the team noticed the right problem quickly enough and whether information was communicated clearly.
The most useful team routine is short: identify the problem, nominate a lead solver, ask for a second check and decide whether to continue or move on. That routine can matter as much as learning another technique.
Team Maths tests mathematical communication under constraint. A team may have several correct ideas available, but only one can be developed quickly enough. Students need to explain what they know, listen for missing information and decide when an answer is reliable. Those are mathematical habits, not merely teamwork skills.
The best team is not necessarily the four highest individual scorers. Look for students with complementary strengths and enough generosity to let another person lead a problem. A short practice session often reveals more than a selection test: who checks, who explains, who notices time and who helps the group recover after a mistake.
The longer-term value is the experience of making mathematics public to other people. Students practise explaining an idea, questioning a method and changing direction without treating a correction as failure. Those habits transfer naturally to project work, science competitions and senior team challenges.
IMTA Team Maths is an advanced-level school competition for teams of four students in Leaving Certificate years, using problems based on Higher Level Mathematics. Its regional rounds and national final give the event a long-running place in Irish school mathematics, but the distinctive challenge is collaboration: students must divide work, communicate partial ideas and check one another under pressure.
