The UKMT Junior Kangaroo gives strong Junior Mathematical Challenge performers a second chance to meet harder problems while they are still in the junior age range. It is not a miniature Olympiad: the questions remain short and the student still needs to work efficiently, but the distractors are less forgiving and the underlying ideas are more demanding than in the first-round JMC.
The usual route is Junior Mathematical Challenge followed by an invitation to Junior Kangaroo. The other major junior follow-on is the Junior Mathematical Olympiad, which has a more extended written-solution format. This distinction is useful for parents. A child who enjoys fast, elegant observations may prefer Kangaroo; a child who wants to write proofs may be drawn towards JMO. Neither route is a universal ranking of mathematical ability.
