BPhO Round 1: A Complete Guide to Qualification, Format and Preparation

What the compulsory Round 0 route and shorter two-hour paper mean for students pursuing the UK Physics Olympiad pathway.

Students who benefit most are those willing to spend months building range, writing complete solutions and learning from questions they cannot finish. Qualification is meaningful, but it is the beginning of a steeper task rather than evidence that the remaining rounds will feel familiar.

Round 0 is now the only route in

The most important practical fact is easy to miss in older advice: participation in Round 0 now controls entry to Round 1. The official Round 1 page states that invitations come from Round 0 results and that there is no alternative route. A school cannot wait until November and enter a strong student directly.

That makes the early-autumn conversation with the physics department essential. Students need a registered teacher, a Round 0 sitting and a result strong enough for invitation before the Round 1 arrangements become relevant. For students who have already qualified, the 2026 UK date is Thursday 12 November. International schools sit the paper on Monday 16 November 2026, with the paper becoming available at midday on Saturday 14 November. Schools outside the UK and Europe are directed by BPhO to the relevant ASEEDER or ASDAN participation channels rather than the ordinary UK process.

What happens during and after the paper

Round 1 has two sections. Section 1 contains short questions; Section 2 offers a choice of longer thematic questions. The total length is two hours, and BPhO notes that the two sections may be sat separately. The 2026 format is shorter than earlier versions, so students using old papers should not assume that historic timings reproduce the current sitting exactly.

The school treats the paper with public-exam-style security. After the sitting, the teacher scans and uploads the scripts to BPhO by Wednesday 18 November 2026. Round 1 and later-round papers are marked by an experienced team at Oxford, and results are sent to the teacher email address by late December.

The entry cost is £18 per student. UK non-fee-paying schools receive four free papers, and later rounds are free. Certificate allocation is described by the organiser as approximate rather than a set of fixed score boundaries:

These figures should not be converted into a promised percentile. The size and strength of the invited cohort can change, and BPhO retains responsibility for the awards.

Why an A-level grade does not settle readiness

The official purpose statement is unusually candid: Round 1 is not an A-level replica or a guide to A-level performance. School examinations usually reward reliable command of a defined curriculum and recognisable task forms. Olympiad problems can require students to select a model, connect several topics and continue without knowing whether the chosen route will succeed.

Written communication matters as much as obtaining a numerical result. A long problem gives a marker evidence through diagrams, assumptions, intermediate relationships and checks. A student who works entirely in compressed private notation may understand more than the script demonstrates. Preparation should therefore include writing for a reader, not only thinking quickly.

Students should also become comfortable leaving a problem incomplete but intelligible. A correct setup, a useful limiting case or a clearly justified relation can show meaningful progress. Replacing that reasoning with pages of unstructured algebra usually makes both the physics and the marking less transparent.

A sensible preparation programme

BPhO recommends working through past papers over the months before the competition and integrating selected problems into teaching. The archive is extensive, but attempting papers in chronological order is not automatically efficient. Begin by learning the recurring habits the questions demand.

A practical preparation cycle is:

  1. Take one Section 1 set without a strict time limit and classify where each solution became stuck.
  2. Choose individual long questions by topic, writing a full solution with units, assumptions and explanatory sentences.
  3. Compare the result with the official mark scheme and identify missing reasoning, not just missing answers.
  4. Reattempt selected questions after a week without looking at the old solution.
  5. Move to a timed two-hour simulation using the current section structure.
  6. Review selection decisions: which long question was chosen, which was abandoned and whether that use of time was justified.

Students do not need to “complete all of physics” before starting. They do need a secure school foundation and the willingness to investigate unfamiliar problems. Teachers can help by discussing multiple solution routes and making past-paper questions part of ordinary lessons rather than isolating Olympiad work as a secret technique.

From Round 1 to Round 2

Results determine invitations to BPhO Round 2, held in late January. The official page says eligible Top Gold students are invited, together with some students who performed particularly well on one or more Round 1 questions. Eligibility conditions for Round 2 still apply, so a certificate colour alone should not be treated as an unconditional invitation.

Round 2 then contributes to selection for the Oxford training camp and ultimately the UK team pathway for the International Physics Olympiad and, where dates permit, the European Physics Olympiad. This is why Round 1 carries more consequence than the flexible BPhO Challenge for Year 13, which is marked in school and does not serve the same selection function.
