UKMT Team Maths Challenge (TMC)
A UK team mathematics competition where students solve collaborative problems across group, crossnumber, shuttle and relay rounds. Open to teams of four from eligible UK schools, mainly covering Years 8–9 or equivalent. Rated Advanced Level, with difficulty mainly coming from non-routine problem-solving, time pressure, teamwork and selective progression to the national final.

Our Take
The UKMT Team Maths Challenge is an early introduction to collaborative competition mathematics. Teams of younger secondary students work through rounds that reward mental agility, clear communication and the ability to divide a problem sensibly. It is a different experience from JMC or IMC: a student is not only responsible for finding an answer, but also for deciding when to share an idea, when to check a teammate's calculation and when to move on. Entry is organised through schools, and the usual pathway runs through a regional stage before the strongest teams progress to later finals. The exact regional arrangements can change, so families should ask the school's mathematics department about the current season. TMC is not a prerequisite for Junior Kangaroo or JMO; it is a parallel team route that develops skills those individual competitions do not measure. The best teams are rarely four identical solo competitors. They have a mixture of strengths, agree how to communicate and practise the relay format specifically. Preparation can be light: short team problem sets, mental arithmetic, role rotation and a habit of explaining an answer before recording it. The aim is to make collaboration mathematically useful rather than merely social. We rate TMC at the Intermediate Level. Its entry route is school-based and its preparation expectation is light, but the format provides a valuable first lesson in mathematical teamwork.
