Our Take
The UK Mathematics Trust runs the Team Maths Challenge to promote mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication. Its most interesting demand is the last of those three. A student can see a promising method and still leave the team stuck if the explanation is unclear, a result arrives too late or nobody checks what another pair has assumed. The regional format combines Group, Crossnumber, Shuttle and Relay activities. Moving between them changes how useful information must travel. CompeteMap sees this as a particularly good opportunity for younger secondary pupils to discover that being mathematically helpful involves listening and checking as well as finding an answer. The TMC National Final returned to London in 2025, its first appearance since 2019. Simon Singh presented prizes and spoke to participants at the 2025 national event. That background places the competition within UKMT’s wider culture of mathematical enrichment, while the everyday value remains close to the school team: practising together, making a shared decision and recovering when a calculation fails. We would prioritise students who enjoy unfamiliar problems and can remain constructive when somebody else sees the solution first. The practical commitment is a school-coordinated event and some purposeful rehearsal of the different formats. Selecting four strong individual performers is a starting point; discovering how those four work together is the preparation that matters most.
