UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge (STMC)
A UK team mathematics competition where students solve collaborative problems across group, crossnumber and shuttle rounds. Open to teams of four Year 12–13 students, or equivalent, through participating UK schools and colleges. Rated Advanced Level, with difficulty mainly coming from non-routine problem-solving, time pressure, teamwork and selective progression to the national final.

Our Take
The UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge changes the question from “How well can one student solve a problem?” to “How effectively can a team think together under pressure?” It brings senior students into a format that combines group problem solving, relay-style communication and rapid decision making. The mathematics matters, but so do role allocation, listening and the ability to explain a half-formed idea clearly enough for someone else to use. The competition is normally entered by a school team rather than by individual students. That means the pathway is organisational as well as mathematical: a teacher selects or assembles a team, the team enters the regional stage and successful teams may progress according to the current UKMT structure. It is not a qualifying round for the BMO or IMO, and parents should not compare a team result directly with an individual Olympiad score. STMC suits students who enjoy collaboration and can stay constructive when another person's method differs from their own. Preparation should include timed team sets, relay practice, deliberate role rotation and a short review after each session. A mathematically brilliant student who cannot communicate may contribute less than a slightly less experienced teammate who keeps the group coordinated. We rate STMC at the Advanced Level because the senior problem-solving demand is high and the route is selective. Its distinctive value is learning how mathematical ideas travel between people.
