UKMT Senior Kangaroo

A UK mathematics competition where students solve 20 challenging integer-answer problems requiring logical and non-routine thinking. Open to Year 13 or below students at UK schools who qualify through the Senior Mathematical Challenge or are entered at their school’s discretion. Rated Advanced Level, with difficulty mainly coming from selective qualification, increasingly demanding problems and the need to produce exact answers without multiple-choice options.

Our Take

The UKMT Senior Kangaroo is the extension round for students who have done particularly well in the Senior Mathematical Challenge but whose next best step may be a demanding short-problem paper rather than a full proof-based Olympiad. It rewards speed with control: students must recognise structure quickly, keep algebra exact and make good decisions when several methods seem possible. The usual route is Senior Mathematical Challenge followed by invitation or school entry to Senior Kangaroo under the current UKMT rules. BMO Round 1 is the other important senior follow-on route, but it has a different output and purpose. Senior Kangaroo is closer to a high-level Challenge; BMO1 asks for longer written arguments. Parents should use the student's preferences as well as the result when deciding which pathway to emphasise. Students who suit Senior Kangaroo often enjoy non-routine algebra, number problems and geometry but still like the pace of a timed paper. Preparation works best through SMC review, past Kangaroo questions and careful analysis of near-misses. A student should learn not only how to solve a problem, but how to decide when to stop pursuing an elegant-looking dead end. We rate Senior Kangaroo at the Advanced Level. It is a selective extension competition with substantial problem-solving demand, and its value lies in sharpening mathematical judgement rather than simply adding another certificate.
