MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3 Challenge)
A US, England and Wales mathematical modelling competition where teams use maths and data to solve an open-ended real-world problem within 14 hours. Open to teams of three to five eligible secondary-school students, mainly US high-school juniors and seniors and sixth-form students aged 16–19 in England and Wales. Rated Expert Level, with difficulty mainly coming from mathematical modelling, data analysis, technical writing and solving a complex problem under strict time pressure.

Our Take
The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge asks students to use mathematics where the problem is not already neatly packaged. Teams receive a real-world question and must decide what to measure, which assumptions are reasonable, how a model should be built and what the results mean. The finished work is not just a calculation; it is an argument about how mathematics can support a decision. This makes M3 fundamentally different from AMC and Olympiad competitions. AMC papers reward individual insight in a controlled format. Olympiads reward proof and mathematical structure. M3 rewards modelling judgement: simplifying without losing important features, testing a model against evidence and communicating uncertainty honestly. The MathWorks competition resources include getting-started material, modelling resources and MATLAB learning support. Software can help, but students first need to define the question and explain their assumptions. A sophisticated simulation built around an unclear question is still weak. The current CompeteMap listing does not yet have an approved Evaluation level, so this guide does not assign one. It can suit students interested in engineering, economics, environmental science, data science, computer science or public policy, especially when they enjoy writing as much as calculating.
