Mathematical Olympiad for Girls
A UK mathematics olympiad where girls and young women solve five challenging proof-based problems. Open to school-nominated students across the UK, with each school able to enter up to four participants. Rated Expert Level, with difficulty mainly coming from advanced problem-solving, rigorous mathematical reasoning and written proofs.

Our Take
The Mathematical Olympiad for Girls is a serious proof-based competition for girls in the upper-secondary age range. Its purpose is not simply to produce another timed score. The problems ask students to explore a mathematical structure, make a conjecture or discover an invariant, and then turn that discovery into a complete written solution. In that respect, MOG belongs much closer to Olympiad mathematics than to ordinary school examination practice. MOG also has a wider role in the UK pathway. It gives talented female mathematicians an identifiable route into advanced problem solving and can help students build the confidence needed for later BMO, Olympiad team or university mathematics opportunities. It is not a qualifying round for the International Mathematical Olympiad, and a strong MOG result should not be presented as an automatic step towards an international team. The educational relationship is one of preparation and participation, not direct qualification. Students who thrive in MOG usually enjoy depth more than speed. They are willing to write several versions of an argument, learn from elegant solutions and accept that a single problem may occupy an entire session. Parents should therefore support regular exposure to proof and discussion rather than pushing a large volume of routine questions. We rate MOG at the Expert Level because the problem-solving and written-output demands are advanced and the entry is selective. It is best approached as a substantial mathematical experience in its own right.
