Pi Quiz 2026

The IMTA Pi Quiz is a team competition for students who enjoy the social side of mathematics. Four students work together on problems based on the Junior Cycle Higher Level Mathematics syllabus, combining individual calculation with group discussion and checking. The challenge is not only whether someone knows how to solve a problem; it is whether the team can decide who should take it, communicate a partial method and avoid losing time to an unchecked assumption. Pi Quiz has a different role from the Irish Mathematical Olympiad. It is not a proof-based senior selection competition and it does not feed directly into the IMO team. Its value is earlier and more practical: it lets younger students experience a structured mathematics event, practise mathematical communication and learn that a team can solve problems that feel difficult to one person working alone. The competition is organised by the Irish Mathematics Teachers' Association and normally includes regional rounds followed by a national final. The 2026 IMTA information listed the regional round for 24 March and the finals for 25 April. Dates and entry conditions can change, so schools should use the official Pi Quiz page and the current IMTA announcements for the next cycle. We rate Pi Quiz at Intermediate Level. The entry is school-based and team-based, while the mathematical content is connected to a familiar curriculum. The strongest preparation is not a long individual revision programme. It is short, timed team practice in which students learn to divide work, explain answers and check calculations without slowing the whole group.
