Future City High School

Editorial perspective

Our Take

Future City High School is the older-student branch of DiscoverE's long-running city-design programme. Its value is not that students can make a futuristic skyline; it is that a team must decide how a city works under pressure. The current fire-resilience brief forces entrants to connect infrastructure, public safety, land use and human behaviour, then express those decisions in forms that other people can interrogate. The essay, Revit model and presentation are not three separate assignments. A convincing entry lets each expose a different part of the same argument: the essay explains assumptions and trade-offs, the model shows whether the design is spatially coherent, and the presentation demonstrates that the team understands its own choices. That integration is what distinguishes the programme from a general architecture visualisation exercise. From an editor's perspective, this competition is worth attention for students who enjoy systems thinking and can tolerate revision. It is less suitable for a team that wants to divide the work into isolated pieces and assemble them at the end. The most promising preparation is a shared design log in which every major feature has a reason, a dependency and a foreseeable consequence.
